The People’s Alliance for Right to Land (PARL) Northern network held a press conference today(14.09.2021) at the Jaffna Press club.The press conference was held to express our concerned with regard to the letter sent by the Jaffna District secretariat on the 25th of August 2021. The letter had requested information from displaced families who own private lands that currently under the occupation of military or police.Three members of the PARL Northern provincial network spoke at the press conference,Mr. N.Inpanayagam,Mr. Gunabalasingham and Mr. Elankovan.
Mr. Inpanayagam spoke about how communities have lost trust on these procedures due to the many such letters they have received before and how these communities have given these information at several occasions to authorities in the hope of the release of their land. He also spoke about the letter sent by PARL with regard to the Government Agent of the Jaffna District Secretariat.
Mr.Kunabalasingham emphasized that it is unfair to request for information amidst an island wide lockdown and provide a deadline that is under a month for submissions. (the deadline for submissions is the 15th of Sep)He also said that people are unable to gather this information and submit before the 15th due to the pandemic situation and lockdown imposed.
"Our request is that the government use the information already provided by the displaced families previously " Said Mr. Elankovan.
